How To Detox
Our bodies are all so different and will need very different types of support depending on toxin exposure, current health states and detox goals. A unique detox protocol will offer customized support for your body.
If you’ve tried detoxing before and you were running to the bathroom for the duration of the cleanse and had a killer headache, it’s not normal! Your body was either not prepared for detoxing, or the cleanse wasn’t a healthy one. We have to be gentle and compassionate when it comes to detoxing, your body has been holding on to those toxins for 10, 20, 50 years! Low and slow is the name of the game. By following the advice of a trained Naturopathic Doctor you can detach the toxins from your cells and safely remove them without feeling horrible for a month. Here are the steps I follow with my patients so they can heal from within.
The first step is always to stop the exposure, whether that is smoking, drinking or even simply changing your shower curtain to a non-plastic one, or no longer using body/skincare products that contain harmful ingredients.
The second step is to ensure all detox organs are working optimally. This means fixing your digestion, clearing up that annoying cough, moving your body and supporting your kidneys. This step is often more important than the actual detox process, because sometimes we just need to clear the constipation for the body to start to excrete all the gunk!
Third step is to support the detoxing organs more specifically. This is done with the help of botanicals that bring blood flow and nutrients to the liver, kidney, and intestines allowing them to function optimally. Common herbs used for detoxing are Rosemary, Globe Artichoke, Dandelion, Burdock, Milk Thistle, and Turmeric. Eating more cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, cabbage and cauliflower can also really help the body cleanse naturally as they support both phases of liver detoxification.
In most cases the top three steps are sufficient and the body can feel the relief of toxins being removed and get back to normal. However, in cases where there was heavy metal exposure we follow with gentle chelation. Lead, mercury, aluminum, and cadmium are common heavy metals that can accumulate in the body but mostly in the brain and bones.
By following a specific chelation protocol we can dislodge the heavy metals from cells, bind them to a carrier and excrete them out of the body.
Detoxing is serious business, it’s not something you want to be doing without being followed by a trained health professional.
