The gut is one of the most important organ systems in your body!  It's not only responsible for digesting food, but the gut produces your feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin and is also home to millions of neurons that communicate with the brain and therefore plays a vital role in mental health.  


The intestines also has billions of bacteria providing protection against harmful bacteria and parasites, but more recently Peyer's patches have been discovered full of immune cells and are actually responsible for the majority of your immune health! A healthy gut microbiota is clearly vital for proper functioning of your entire body.  However, due to stress, diet, toxins, antibiotics, and our overly clean environment our gut is often the first to suffer and provides a good clue as to what is happening inside your body.  


Having such a close relationship with overall health, the gut is usually where naturopathic treatment starts, for good reasons!  There is more and more evidence-based research on the importance of a good digestion, and its link with almost every system in the body.
